Become a Befriender

Lifelink has always had a close association with The
Samaritans befriending organisation in the UK (we
have a 'twinning' relationship with the Northampton
branch) and subsequently became a member of
Befrienders International. To further cement this
relationship, the name Lifelink Samaritans was
adopted in 1994.

In November 1996 we introduced a 1300 number for
callers outside the Launceston area. This means that
callers anywhere in Tasmania can now access
telephone befriending for the cost of a local call.
In early 2000 the modifications to our existing centre,
which dates back to 1864, were completed enabling us
to bring all our operating needs under the one roof.

The new extensions have also greatly improved the
working and social environment for our volunteers.
This building project had only been made possible by
the hard work of our volunteer fund raisers, and the
generous support of the local community, over many
years.
Following the opening of the new extensions we
released a short history of the organisation which has
seen many changes in the course of its 33 years. The
history is a tribute to the many volunteers that have
given, and are still giving, of their time to serve the
community.
